what we do

Not Just Landscape

We take you out every day in the Land Rover off the beaten track, but also into towns and villges. The photographing of people is part of every course. Italians of all classes and trades are usually happy to be photographed if approached with tact. With our intimate knowledge of the country, the language and the people we'll be able to introduce you to the farmers, shopkeepers, wine-growers, fishermen and good old boys of Etruria and Rome.

And you won't waste  precious time - we'll get you to the right place at the right time when the sun is where it should be for the best possible shot. A photographic vacation like no other - Ansel Adams would be proud!

Patrick and Gigi   mono portrait

Patrick Nicholas - left - discusses the price of fish with Gigi  in Capodimonte, Lake Bolsena- ph. J. Parrish

A weathered old barn door, and a reflector to  pull the face out of  the shadow, simple enough.

Technical Tips - we'll be there to give you technical help if and when you need it with everything from depth-of-field to help with your flash. The handling of tricky lighting situations using single and multiple flash units, coloured gels, reflectors and even smoke canisters to create the right atmosphere is an integral part of every course.

Roman cistern

This almost pitch dark Roman cistern was illuminated by one simple flash unit with coloured gels. The camera was on a tripod and the shutter opened for as long as it took to walk around the cistern

Thinking of going digital but daren't take the plunge? We also have digital equipment, scanner, printer and computers (Mac and PC) so we can help you get started in the digital field, show you the wonders of image manipulation and more. We can even up-load some of your images onto this site in the Gallery  section while you're still with us!

  cascade

The cascade above is not two images  but three sewn together. Even though we used a reflector to push the evening light into the shadows and a flash this created no difficulties when we came to stitch the images together - even at A3 size it is impossible to spot the seams.

Bring some work with you - constructive criticism is all part of the process. We hold slide shows of work taken during the course, we scan and print your work while you are still with us ; we encourage you to send postcards of your own work to friends at home - what's the point of buying them? Getting your work seen and appreciated is a MUST.
